Open Data as an Asset for the Lifecycle

BIM was a major leap forward from CAD, which was a major leap forward from T-squares and triangles. Within the last few decades, planning and designing buildings have dramatically evolved. The next generation of use cases capitalizes on the data aspects of OpenBIM and open data standards for interoperability. People no longer have to be highly-trained GIS specialists with costly GIS applications and workstations to call for an Uber ride or get turn-by-turn directions while driving. BIM has made similar leaps in capabilities.
 
The National Institute of Building Sciences has been working with federal agencies to establish practices that integrate existing internal processes and systems with BIM and the processes of design and construction consultants. Roger Grant, FbSI, NIBS Executive Director of BIM, and Kimon Onuma, FAIA, Onuma, Inc., will present use cases. Federal agencies such as Veterans Affairs, the Department of State, Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations, and the Federal Highway Administration programs are evolving to capture the value of BIM. OpenBIM makes data a critical asset supporting the design, construction, and entire lifecycle.

BIMStorm - Driving BIM and Data Standards for Owners and the Industry

Owners expect value from BIM for the entire lifecycle. Sharing data in an open format enables using data across many tools and processes. Learn how to use BIM strategies for projects and facilities as an owner, architect, engineer, and developer. BIM has been around for a long time, but now it is time to take it through the roof!

The National Institute of Building Sciences and Onuma Inc. present their thirty years of BIM experience and fast forward it to today and where the opportunities are for all. Projects have included healthcare, the US Coast Guard, General Services Administration, and others. Current work to be highlighted is the US Department of State, Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations, and the California Community Colleges. In addition, BIM, GIS, openBIM standards, owner standards, COBie, web APIs, and platforms will be discussed.

BIMStorms taught us to build informed environments using ecosystems to collaborate face to face and at a distance. This session will use strategies developed for owners to illustrate the immediate opportunities for all stakeholders through a presentation and hands-on exercises. To demonstrate the power of open platforms and tools, access to sample scenarios and data will be provided.

As the building industry continues to move to digital workflows, the importance of process and information standards continues to grow and evolve. To meet these evolving needs, the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) is updating the National BIM Standard and working with other organizations to develop complementary standards and a National BIM Program to coordinate those efforts.

The California Community Colleges are the largest globally, with over 5,000 buildings and 91 million square feet statewide. The FUSION system at the state level tracks facilities, spaces, use, and condition across all 5,000 buildings in a standardized way. Learn how the FUSION Web APIs are the foundation that enables digital twins and many applications using the same data.

The Los Angeles Community College, with 229,793 students and 740 buildings, is the state's largest. BuildLACCD has been on a multi-year initiative using BIM, GIS, and CMMS web APIs as a digital twin. As a result, they connected the dots between the FUSION system, district data, and facilities last year. An unprecedented accomplishment for facility owners at this scale with a tight budget with lessons learned for owners large and small and their consultants.

The objective is to use digital twins and share common data regardless of what application is being used or the skill level of end-users. Unfortunately, most owners struggle to access their own information, and silos develop even with digital twins. Learn how BuildLACCD is achieving a platform-driven digital twin and how this approach can be applied across the industry.

To demonstrate the power of open platforms and tools, access to sample scenarios and data will be provided.

  • Facility Data from the entire state is connected to the FUSION System managed by the Foundation for California Community Colleges (FCCC) for space inventory, space use, facility condition, and GIS for location. 
  • FUSION has an API that enables other systems to connect to their source of truth data. 
  • This connection to facility data is where BIM comes into play.
  • Numerous BIM and facility applications are linked to CCC FUSION data.
  • This BIMStorm presents some of the results and encourages more innovation from the industry.
