DC Asset Management Lab at UDC Completes Pilot Course
October 2019 Course Focused on “Streetscapes – Including Potholes”

The DC Asset Management Lab at the University of the District of Columbia Pilot Course successfully completed in summer 2019.

A 4-week course titled “Streetscapes – Including Potholes” will begin in October 2019.

The Pilot Course concluded with a Public Presentation that overviewed what was taught and highlighted student work. People from 22 countries observed the presentation live.

The Lab provides a problem from the DC Government and provides a safe environment to explore potential solutions using ISO 55000 to guide asset visualization using data securely shared on the web.

The Pilot Course started with improving planning of DC Public School Campuses. Through student suggestion, the Pilot Course also explored the planning of Public Restrooms that could be added to campuses, or anywhere else in the district. Public data from multiple sources were combined to generate visual representations “landed” on Google Earth, energy reports, cost reports, automatically generated asset inventories and other beneficial data analysis that assists strategic decision making.

One student, Stacey Tyley, Armed Forces Retirement Home Director of Real Estate Development, worked on the AFRH D.C. Campus for homework and presented her results at the Public Presentation.

A recording of the Public Presentation and the segment focused on Stacey Tyley’s work is below.

Four Tuesday classes provide 1-hour of expert instruction. Three Thursday web discussions are used to clarify any issues that arise. The final Thursday of the class is a workshop/presentation/reception. The public is invited to the presentation, which highlights the possible solutions the students created to address the problem.

Municipal executives and managers from anywhere are welcome to participate in the course or observe the presentation on Thursday 8 August at 11:30 am Eastern. The presentation includes Jeffrey Orner and James Salmon as jurors.

Mr. Orner was responsible for engineering and logistics at the U.S. Coast Guard under Commandant Admiral Thad Allen, who introduced the tools and processes that evolved into BIMStorms. Mr. Orner is now president of Arlington Ridge Consulting.

Mr. Salmon is a lawyer who has been involved with BIMStorms since they began 11 years ago and is president of Collaborative Construction, a company that helps eliminate problems with model building and guided interaction at the start of a project.

The BIMStorm exercise is based on publicly available information. The scenarios are typical of real world challenges faced by owners of facilities but are specifically set up to make the exercise as real as possible while still remaining fictitious.

By participating  you agree that the input provided is intended to be shared to foster collaboration and a learning experience for all. The results will be presented at conferences, on the web and in publications.
